Weligama Beach – South Coast
Located in the town of Weligama, part of the Matara district, this beach is framed by a beautiful shallow bay – ideal for perfecting your balancing techniques. The area is an amalgamation of sandy shores and coconut palms swaying in the breeze. The locals are just as enthusiastic as the visitors when it comes to surfing, making your experience both fun and relaxing. In between breaks, explore and discover the stilt fishermen, that’s right, fishermen balancing on narrow poles stuck into the sand where the surf breaks.
The Beach is a 2 km stretch of golden sand, in the distance is the offshore island of Taprobane; do pay this place a visit! Enjoy mellow rides in Weligama offering right and left-handers which break on the beach
perfect for beginners. Top surf season is from October to April.
Take along board shorts, loads of sunscreen and UV rash guards. South Sri Lanka temperatures range from 33 C during daytime to 22 C degrees at night.
